Why decks go gray

Two things are happening at once. Ultraviolet light breaks down the lignin holding the surface wood fibres together, and mold moves into the softened layer. The result is a gray, slightly fuzzy surface that no longer takes stain properly. It is shallow — usually a fraction of a millimeter — and it comes off cleanly if the wash is done right.

Done wrong, it gets worse. Too much pressure blasts out the soft spring wood between the grain lines and leaves a furry, ridged surface that will never look right again and drinks stain unevenly forever. This is the single most damaged surface we see on New Jersey properties, and it is always the same cause.

Wood

Pressure-treated pine, cedar and mahogany all get a wood-safe cleaner, a dwell, and a low-pressure rinse — the cleaner lifts the mold and the gray, not the water. Where a deck has heavy tannin bleed or rust runs from fixings, a brightener follows to even out the color and bring the pH back to where a stain can bond.

Composite and PVC

Trex, TimberTech, Azek and the rest are not maintenance-free, they are lower maintenance. Mold still grows in the embossed grain, and the surface film of pollen and organic debris still needs removing. What they will not tolerate is pressure: it scars the cap layer permanently, and unlike wood there is nothing to sand back. We use the low-pressure, cleaner-led method the manufacturers publish.

Fencing

Fence lines are priced by the linear foot and cleaned on both sides where access allows. Vinyl fencing brightens dramatically. Wood fencing behaves like a deck. Aluminum and wrought iron get a gentle wash that will not lift the coating.

If you are staining afterwards

Cleaning is the first half of the job and the half that decides whether the second half lasts. Book the wash, let the wood dry, then stain — that sequence is why our finishes last. We can do both, and if you want them together see deck staining and sealing.

Questions

About Deck & Fence Washing

My deck went gray. Is it ruined?
Almost never. Gray is UV-degraded surface fiber with mold living in it, usually less than a millimeter deep. Cleaning takes it back to sound wood underneath. Only boards that are soft, cracked through or rotting need replacing, and we will show you which ones those are.
Can you clean Trex or composite decking?
Yes, and it needs care. Composite scars under high pressure and the damage is permanent because there is no sanding it out. We clean it with a purpose-made composite cleaner at low pressure, which is what the manufacturers specify.
Can I stain right afterwards?
Not immediately. Wood needs to dry to below roughly 15% moisture, which is normally two to three dry days. Staining a damp deck is the most common reason a finish fails within a year.
Do you clean under the deck too?
Where there is access, yes u2014 framing and joists get rinsed, which matters because that is where mold survives to re-seed the boards above.
